Fly Art Vol. 2 — Passing the Flyers Hand to Hand

Back then, nobody kept flyers. You picked them up at a record shop or at the top of the escalators, folded them into your pocket, scribbled a number on the back, and passed them on. Their job was to announce a date and keep the word moving. Uncle Texaco was one of the people doing the passing, and he never imagined those sheets would one day become archives. Fly Art Vol. 2 picks up where the first volume left off: 46 photocopied flyers from the French hip-hop scene between 1987 and 1994, drawn from his own collection and from the archives of several people who opened theirs.
The result is a map rather than a catalogue. Party flyers from Paris rap nights and sound systems sit next to documents from Cergy, Gentilly, Villiers-le-Bel, Toulouse, Bourges, Villeurbanne and Geneva. There is a Zulu’s Letter ballot for the Triomphes 89, a mail-order form for a French Zulu Nation t-shirt, radio cards from Radio Libertaire and F.C.D.R., and a Centre Pompidou programme on rap. Lettering and drawings by Salim, Eskiss, Noé 2, Kool G and others run throughout, and an illustrated index dates and locates every document. Paperback, 52 pages, 26.5 × 26.5 cm, in French and English, designed by Paolo Proserpio. As Uncle Texaco puts it: “These flyers once announced the future. Today, they’re its memory.”
The book launches on Wednesday 4 November at Blazing Music, the record shop in the 11th arrondissement.
