SSS — 30 years of Luxembourg graffiti: book signing and film screening

On Thursday, 26 November, Luxembourg’s graffiti scene comes to Le Grand Jeu for a double bill. The first half is SSS, the book tracing thirty years of work by SPIKE, STICK and SUMO. They were among the first writers in the country when graffiti and hip-hop arrived in 1995, and their styles helped shape its walls. At 544 pages, with more than 1,000 images and sketches, the book covers writing, tagging, painting, jams, parties and collaborations with crews across Europe. It follows how three styles evolved into signatures that are now instantly recognisable.

The second half is a screening of Am Schluechthaus, a 26-minute documentary co-directed by Olivier “Sader” Potozec and Jérôme Freund. It tells the story of Luxembourg’s former slaughterhouse in Hollerich, which stayed fully painted for twenty-five years after it closed. The film was shot mostly during “I Love Graffiti am Schluechthaus” in May 2023, when about a hundred artists from across Europe repainted more than 2,500 m² of walls. Along the way, it asks how the memory of a quarter-century of subversive culture can survive the site’s redevelopment. There will be two screenings, and a third if the room calls for it.
