Jim Saah — In My Eyes, D.C. hardcore on film

On Thursday, 12 November, in the middle of Paris Photo week, Le Grand Jeu and King Koala Press open an exhibition of the work of Jim Saah, the Washington, D.C. photographer who documented the city’s hardcore punk scene from the inside. From 1982 to 1997, he followed Minor Threat, Faith, Void and Fugazi at close range. He also photographed Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, the Ramones and Lou Reed. His pictures ended up on the cover of Fugazi’s Repeater and in Our Band Could Be Your Life. As Ian MacKaye put it, they “often would look like the way I felt on stage.”

The exhibition brings together fourteen black-and-white photographs, all shot on film and printed on archival pigment paper. Each is signed and numbered by the artist, and all are for sale. A poster wall of crowd shots and archive material completes the show. It’s also the Paris launch of the European/Japanese edition of In My Eyes, published by King Koala Press. Jim Saah will be there for the opening night, along with the publisher. There’s no formal talk, just time to meet him, look at the prints and talk about the scene.
