SUMMARY:One Love Books Paris Launch — Greensleeves\, Clarks and Jamaica
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 10 October\, the London publisher One Love Books comes to Paris for an afternoon at Le Comptoir Général\, co-organised with Le Grand Jeu and Judah Roger. There’s no talk and no stage. It’s a meet-and-greet with Alexander Newman\, a book signing\, and DJ sets on vinyl while the venue carries on as usual. Signed copies of Greensleeves: The First 100 Covers will be available on the day\, alongside From Somerset to the World and Clarks in Jamaica. \nOne Love Books documents the visual and material history of Jamaican music and its diaspora. Their books cover the sleeves of a label that shaped reggae and dancehall\, and the unlikely story of how a Somerset shoe became a Kingston uniform. These are histories told through objects\, and that’s why they sit naturally on our shelves next to graffiti\, hip-hop and skate. SUMMARY:50/66 — Route 66\, Film & the Art You're Not Supposed to Find
DESCRIPTION:Route 66 turns one hundred this year\, and most of what made it famous is gone. Motels boarded up\, gas stations rusting where they stand\, whole towns bypassed by the interstate and left to hold their shape without a function. It is a road that survives largely as an idea — which is exactly the condition Mars Yahl and Roomattack set out to photograph and draw. \nFor two months they drove it end to end. Mars Yahl shot film along the way\, recording what still stands of an America quietly given up on. Roomattack worked in the opposite direction: in every motel room they slept in\, he hid a drawing on the wall and left it there. One was documenting what remains\, the other planting what would have to be looked for. 50/66 Hidden Art Project puts the two side by side\, in two chapters — On Route 66 and Off Route 66 — and in doing so becomes something closer to a map. Route 66 enthusiasts have already started hunting the hidden pieces down\, town by town. \nPublished in an edition of 200 for the centenary of the Mother Road — and\, as the authors like to point out\, two hundred years after Niépce fixed the first photograph — the book carries its own second layer: several images animate in augmented reality. Mars Yahl and Roomattack will be at the shop to present the project and sign copies. SUMMARY:SSS — 30 years of Luxembourg graffiti: book signing and film screening
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 26 November\, Luxembourg’s graffiti scene comes to Le Grand Jeu for a double bill. The first half is SSS\, the book tracing thirty years of work by SPIKE\, STICK and SUMO. They were among the first writers in the country when graffiti and hip-hop arrived in 1995\, and their styles helped shape its walls. At 544 pages\, with more than 1\,000 images and sketches\, the book covers writing\, tagging\, painting\, jams\, parties and collaborations with crews across Europe. It follows how three styles evolved into signatures that are now instantly recognisable. \nThe second half is a screening of Am Schluechthaus\, a 26-minute documentary co-directed by Olivier “Sader” Potozec and Jérôme Freund. It tells the story of Luxembourg’s former slaughterhouse in Hollerich\, which stayed fully painted for twenty-five years after it closed. The film was shot mostly during “I Love Graffiti am Schluechthaus” in May 2023\, when about a hundred artists from across Europe repainted more than 2\,500 m² of walls. Along the way\, it asks how the memory of a quarter-century of subversive culture can survive the site’s redevelopment.
