SUMMARY:Philadelphia Graffiti Handstyles — Street Penmanship\, from Gangster Prints to Wickeds
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia has never had the mainstream aura of New York\, and its writing has stayed largely off the record. Yet few cities have produced a scriptural texture of their own — a shared way of shaping letters that goes beyond the individual signature. Some local writers call this American metropolis “Whip City”: in the sense used in boxing or dancing\, the whip is the energy pushed into a stroke to get speed and consistency at once. Named “Gangster Prints” when they first appeared in the mid-to-late 1960s\, the old Philly hands have since branched into a whole family of variants\, developed on walls and refined on paper. \nIn the spring of 2023\, French graphic designer and architect François Chastanet spent time in the streets of Philadelphia with his camera. He also sat down for notebook lettering sessions with writers from several generations — a rare look at the preparatory work that happens before anything reaches a wall. The result traces the ongoing evolution of the city’s handstyles\, with particular attention to the condensed\, monumental “Tall Hands” and the “Wickeds”\, elaborate wild-style signatures that demand exceptional control and exist nowhere else. Chastanet has been doing this kind of close visual analysis for two decades\, from Pixação: São Paulo Signature to Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles and Dishu: Ground Calligraphy in China. \nPhiladelphia Graffiti Handstyles: An Exploration in The Early 2020s gathers 125 color photographs and diagrams across 160 hardcover pages in a 24×36 cm format\, with a foreword by Philadelphia writer and researcher Sam Meyerson aka CURVE — co-author\, with Bret Syfert\, of the Tallhand & Punchline fonts and manual — and an essay by Chastanet himself. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, 16 October\, Nespo is back at Le Grand Jeu to launch the second volume of Rideaux de Fer\, his zine devoted entirely to the painted shutters of Paris. The idea hasn’t changed since issue one. When a shop closes for the night\, its shutter becomes a wall\, and graffiti writers have been using those walls for decades. Page after page\, Nespo documents the city’s roll-down shutters\, from laundromats and bakeries to corner cafés and neighbourhood supermarkets. Tags\, throw-ups and full pieces sit between shop signs and phone numbers. \nThis issue carries a special focus on Lutes BMC\, whose shutters mix lettering with characters lifted from pop culture. The zine includes an unpublished interview\, archive material and action shots. It’s printed offset in colour\, A5\, with 110 pages and a perfect binding. SUMMARY:Itinéraire bis — A Hong Kong journey by Yucka & Jean Moner
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 17 October\, Yucka and Jean Moner come up from Nantes to present Itinéraire bis\, a book of film photographs taken in Hong Kong in February 2025. Both come from the graffiti scene\, and that background shows in how they look at the city: side streets\, details\, places away from the usual routes. The 276-page book is organised into eleven chapters\, each opened by a short text. They’re meant as ways in\, not captions. For the day\, a selection of their prints will hang on the shop walls. \nGraffiti is still there\, just set apart. The book comes with an 84-page fanzine covering the local scene and the duo’s own painting sessions in the city. The fanzine also opens up to digital photography\, while the book stays entirely analogue. There’s also a box-set edition. SUMMARY:50/66 — Route 66\, Film & the Art You're Not Supposed to Find
DESCRIPTION:Route 66 turns one hundred this year\, and most of what made it famous is gone. Motels boarded up\, gas stations rusting where they stand\, whole towns bypassed by the interstate and left to hold their shape without a function. It is a road that survives largely as an idea — which is exactly the condition Mars Yahl and Roomattack set out to photograph and draw. \nFor two months they drove it end to end. Mars Yahl shot film along the way\, recording what still stands of an America quietly given up on. Roomattack worked in the opposite direction: in every motel room they slept in\, he hid a drawing on the wall and left it there. One was documenting what remains\, the other planting what would have to be looked for. 50/66 Hidden Art Project puts the two side by side\, in two chapters — On Route 66 and Off Route 66 — and in doing so becomes something closer to a map. Route 66 enthusiasts have already started hunting the hidden pieces down\, town by town. \nPublished in an edition of 200 for the centenary of the Mother Road — and\, as the authors like to point out\, two hundred years after Niépce fixed the first photograph — the book carries its own second layer: several images animate in augmented reality. Mars Yahl and Roomattack will be at the shop to present the project and sign copies. SUMMARY:Jim Saah — In My Eyes\, D.C. hardcore on film
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 12 November\, in the middle of Paris Photo week\, Le Grand Jeu and King Koala Press open an exhibition of the work of Jim Saah\, the Washington\, D.C. photographer who documented the city’s hardcore punk scene from the inside. From 1982 to 1997\, he followed Minor Threat\, Faith\, Void and Fugazi at close range. He also photographed Iggy Pop\, Sonic Youth\, the Ramones and Lou Reed. His pictures ended up on the cover of Fugazi’s Repeater and in Our Band Could Be Your Life. As Ian MacKaye put it\, they “often would look like the way I felt on stage.” \nThe exhibition brings together fourteen black-and-white photographs\, all shot on film and printed on archival pigment paper. Each is signed and numbered by the artist\, and all are for sale. A poster wall of crowd shots and archive material completes the show. It’s also the Paris launch of the European/Japanese edition of In My Eyes\, published by King Koala Press. Jim Saah will be there for the opening night\, along with the publisher.
