SUMMARY:Métamorphe — From Blackletter to Cholo
DESCRIPTION:Gothic script was never meant to travel. It was built for Northern European scribes\, carried to Spain\, then loaded onto ships — and once it reached Mesoamerica it stopped behaving like a European alphabet. Blackletter absorbed whatever it landed in: colonial signage\, devotional imagery\, tattoo culture\, the walls of Mexico City and the barrios of the American Southwest. What came back out was something else entirely — góticas mexicanas\, and the Cholo writing that shaped a large part of how West Coast letters look today. \nLola Raingard follows that drift across two continents. Métamorphe / Shape-shifter is research as much as picture book: it tracks how a script adapts and hybridises the further it gets from home\, and pairs the argument with the author’s own photographs alongside public-domain images documenting these gothic manifestations. That tape still exists\, and so does the crew. Namur Break Sensation have been at it for thirty-five years\, which in b-boy terms is closer to a geological era than a career. Trente-Cinq\, published by Wal’Style\, is what they pulled out of the boxes to mark it — 68 pages in black and white\, A5\, written by Guillaume Roose and designed by Julien Roose. Flyers\, photographs\, jams\, faces. Not a monument\, more a crew talking among themselves and letting you listen in. \nBelgian hip-hop rarely gets told from the inside\, and almost never from Wallonia. DESCRIPTION:Before Homecore\, there was a kid from the banlieue raised the hard way\, with street culture as a first language. \nThat kid was Alexandre Guarneri. Thirty years after founding one of French hip-hop’s defining labels\, he has gone back through his own story to ask how you take apart what you were taught in order to find your own way. Du bitume au sacré\, published by Jouuue Editions\, is where he works on that question without pretending to close it. The book is short\, illustrated and openly personal\, moving between the streets that formed him and what occupies him now: meditation\, Gumjo\, a shelf of books on spirituality. No conversion story\, no before-and-after. SUMMARY:Philadelphia Graffiti Handstyles — Street Penmanship\, from Gangster Prints to Wickeds
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia has never had the mainstream aura of New York\, and its writing has stayed largely off the record. Yet few cities have produced a scriptural texture of their own — a shared way of shaping letters that goes beyond the individual signature. Local writers call it Whip City: in the sense used in boxing or dancing\, the whip is the energy pushed into a stroke to get speed and consistency at once. Named “Gangster Prints” when they first appeared in the mid-to-late 1960s\, the old Philly hands have since branched into a whole family of variants\, developed on walls and refined on paper. \nIn the spring of 2023\, French graphic designer and architect François Chastanet spent time in the streets of Philadelphia with his camera. He also sat down for notebook lettering sessions with writers from several generations — a rare look at the preparatory work that happens before anything reaches a wall. The result traces the ongoing evolution of the city’s handstyles\, with particular attention to the condensed\, monumental “Tall Hands” and the “Wickeds”\, elaborate wild-style signatures that demand exceptional control and exist nowhere else. Chastanet has been doing this kind of close visual analysis for two decades\, from Pixação: São Paulo Signature to Cholo Writing: Latino Gang Graffiti in Los Angeles and Dishu: Ground Calligraphy in China. \nPhiladelphia Graffiti Handstyles: An Exploration in The Early 2020s gathers 125 color photographs and diagrams across 160 hardcover pages in a large 24×36 cm format\, with a foreword by Philadelphia writer and researcher Sam Meyerson aka CURVE — co-author\, with Bret Syfert\, of the Tallhand & Punchline fonts and manual — and an essay by Chastanet himself.
