In 2014, Le Grand Jeu collaborated with the French artist L’Atlas to produce a remarkable artist’s book, Diagonals. This project brought together the creative vision of the artist and the curatorial expertise of Le Grand Jeu, resulting in a unique work that bridges fine art, calligraphy, and urban visual culture. The book stands as a testament to L’Atlas’ innovative approach to letters and urban markings, offering readers and collectors an intimate encounter with his practice.
Diagonals is composed of 14 lithographs, presented in an accordion-style book and printed by the renowned Atelier R.L.D. in a limited edition of 50 copies on 240 gr. Rivoli paper. Each copy is signed and numbered by Jules Dedet Granel, better known as L’Atlas, adding a personal touch that underscores the exclusivity and craftsmanship of the edition. The combination of meticulous printing techniques and hand-drawn originals creates a tactile and visual experience that engages both the eye and the mind.
Each lithograph represents a stage in the development of a hand-drawn sketch, capturing the evolution of the artist’s thought process. In Diagonals, L’Atlas moves beyond the horizontal and vertical linearity that has dominated his work over the past decade, exploring a new formal language built on diagonals. This shift transforms perspective, redefining his engagement with calligraphy and urban markings while opening new aesthetic possibilities and challenging conventional approaches to letterforms.
